Volunteers’ Week focus – Auchencairn volunteers

Our first focus for Volunteers’ Week is on a team of deserving volunteers in the community of Auchencairn.

The group in question, as well as one special mention below, are a band of volunteers helping out in the village shop – Rosie McClure, Jennifer Stephenson, Chris Moody, Sarah Thomas, Alex Ross, Lee Paton and Helen Cockburn.

This team has enabled the shop owners, Vicki Pitts and James Higgs, to provide an invaluable customer service, whilst at the same time maintaining strict social distancing guidelines.

The volunteers are also operating a grocery delivery service by bicycle to the more elderly citizens.

These measures have enabled the village shop to reduce the risk of Coronavirus transmission to an absolute minimum.

Of special mention in this focus is Alec McMillan, who since lockdown has been doing the early morning collection of the community’s newspapers from the local distribution point at the Palnackie Village shop, Monday to Friday and Saturday every week.

He then labels them up and leaves them in his garden shed for collection by individual customers.

He also co-ordinates the collection of customers weekly payments for their newspaper orders.

This has significantly reduced the handing of newspapers and hence reduced the risk of Coronavirus contact by not selling them through the village shop, as was the case before lock-down.

A special team to start our Volunteers’ Week coverage and our first thank you of the day.
