Volunteers’ Week – Creative Whithorn Corona Gallery (Fran Raw and Caroline Smith)

For our next Volunteers’ Week profile, we join Fran Raw and Caroline Smith at The Creative Whithorn Corona Gallery, who have been setting daily challenges and free colouring sheet downloads and, through Destination Whithorn, taking people on virtual walks every morning.

Fran, pictured right, and Caroline have worked in the art sector for many years and know the importance of creativity for healthy minds. Fran is also an elected Community Councillor.

The Corona Gallery was started as the schools went on lockdown. The pair realised that having a daily creative challenge would take the pressure off mums stuck at home with children and also keep people’s minds active and stimulated.

They have run a couple of competitions for both adults and kids to enter with prizes donated by Whithorn and District Community Council, Central Cafe Whithorn, Galloway Art and HappySnail Crafts.

Destination Whithorn was set up over a year ago to highlight the wonders of Whithorn but has adapted since lockdown.

Many ex-residents were cut off from their families and worried about them. So, Fran started doing early morning walks with the dog, taking photos as she went, to let people know that all was well – the shops are still trading, the cemetery is still being cared for.

They now have a following all over the world that takes their virtual morning stroll with the pair.

If you know of an organisation or volunteers that should feature in our coverage this week, there is still time to let us know. Email alan.hall@tsdg.org.uk with details and a picture.
