Volunteers’ Week – Bill Moran: Dedication to fundraising

Bill Moran began volunteering with Leonard Cheshire as a fundraiser after meeting volunteer Martin Anderson on the local bus into town one morning six years ago.

Martin described what he did as a volunteer, introduced him to the Volunteer Co-ordinator and Bill – being a genuinely kind-hearted and generous man – immediately signed up to the role.

In the early days, Bill accompanied Martin in his street collections where they not only enjoyed the work but also the friendship that they developed.

Bill soon learned the ropes and ‘the young 86-year-old’ now does weekly collections in Dumfries town centre throughout the summer months, raising over £120 every week.

Bill unfortunately doesn’t enjoy full health nor eyesight and now uses a wheelchair but this never deters him from his unbelievable dedication and determination to raise money for the charity.

As Bill himself says: “My volunteering is my life now.”
