Gambling Awareness Training set for Dumfries in July

The Gambling Education Hub is Scotland’s only national gambling education and prevention programme, operated by Fast Forward, a national voluntary organisation that since 1987 promotes the health and wellbeing of young people.

The Hub provides free training, resources and support to practitioners working with young people, parents and families across Scotland. Its mission is to ensure that every young person in Scotland has access to effective gambling education and prevention opportunities.

Recent figures from the Gambling Commission show that 14% of 11-16 year olds spent their own money in the past week: this rate was higher than Drinking alcohol (13%), Smoking tobacco (4%) and taking illegal drugs (2%). Gambling is a public health issue, however it is often a hidden problem – the CPD sessions that the Hub offers are a great opportunity to strengthen the role that practitioners working with young people and parents can have in promoting gambling prevention and early intervention through the services they already deliver.

A Gambling Education Training will be held in Dumfries on Wednesday July 24 at Oasis Youth Centre in collaboration with Third Sector Dumfries and Galloway. This is a free CPD for youth workers, CLD workers, practitioners from youth employability services and those promoting the health and wellbeing of young people, parents and families.

Through a harm reduction approach, this training session will support participants in:

• Increasing their awareness of gambling-related harms and the impact on young people;
• Strengthening their skills and confidence to deliver gambling education and prevention activities with young people;
• Increasing their knowledge of resources available and of specialised support services.
