Community Food-sharing in Upper Nithsdale

There are a selection of volunteering opportunities to help with Food Share within Upper Nithsdale.

Food sharing in Upper Nithsdale is based at the Miner’s Memorial Hall in Kirkconnel and covers Kirkconnel, Kelloholm and Sanquhar.


What we do: Collect and deliver shares of food to various households in our community. An average of 3 to 4 bags per household are delivered.

When: Weekday afternoons from 1pm

Skills: Driving license and access to a vehicle. Patience and a listening ear.

Other information: A reference may be requested


What we do: Unload and sort food into bags ready for distribution.

When: Weekday mornings from 11am

Skills: Attention to detail, care and awareness to prevent damage to food in transit. Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a happy team.

Food Handlers and Cooks

What we do: Check and rotate stock, cook and prepare ready meals to share and, prepare afternoon teas.

When: Meals Tuesdays and Fridays. Afternoon teas on Sundays

Skills: An interest in cooking, food-handling and hygiene

Other information: Training will be given

Raised bed/planter club assistant

What we do: help develop accessible interest and involvement in growing food

When: Various

Skills: An interest in growing things and developing opportunities to share.

Project Volunteers

What we do: Help develop other sharing opportunities and community involvement.

When: Various

Skills: Enthusiasm, vision, interest in the community and the environment.
